Journey to Yesterday

Date produced: 1959

Filmmaker(s):

Peter B. Delaurenti

Description:

"A diesel followed by yesterday's steam locomotives lay the contrasts for this journey to yesterday. Rio Grande's old seam locomotive 473 takes us from Durango to Silverton, Colorado, through the wild country where enroute we see things today as they were yesterday. Throughout this trip we feel the realism of the sound accompaniment, so tastefully a part of the picture. The maker of this film was well aware of the need to include people and human interest, and it did it well" PSA Journal, Nov. 1959, 48-49.

Joyous Noel

Date produced: 1954

Filmmaker(s):

Gilbert B. Jansen

Description:

"Joyous Noel by Gilbert B. Jansen Jr. is the sort of color motion picture record of an American family's Christmas that so many home-loving cameramen dream of producing - but seldom do. Undoubtedly the producer and all members of his family will treasure this film immediately. Not a great work, Joyous Noel is nevertheless an unusually good Christmas film in which all of the preparations and celebrations found in graceful family living are depicted through the activities of a young couple and their two children. Well lighted scenes, technically proficient camera work, pleasant acting by all concerned, and a background of Christmas carol music all contribute to make this a thoroughly pleasant production" PSA Journal, Jan. 1955, 50.

Jungle in a Jar

Date produced: 1957

Filmmaker(s):

Gene Arneson

Description:

"A breaker of water is collected from a stream and one drop of this little world is placed under a microscope. Looking for a particular micro-organism is like searching for a person in a large city, yet these little animals seem to be unlimited. In this micro world there are many forms of existence, these may resemble bugs or flowers. Gene Arneson has done more than merely to photograph these tiny creatures. He narrates the story to tell us about some of the unusual activities, their methods of propulsion, and to describe a fight in this drop of water. He gives us the feeling of having seen a scenario type of picture" PSA Journal, Nov. 1957, 33.

Just Fishing

B. V. Covert

King of Metals

Date produced: 1950

Filmmaker(s):

David W. Kean

Description:

"David W. Kean has made a simple expository film of a two-man gold mining outfit. But in it he has kept the human touch. A well written narrative supplements the pictured material in explaining the various operations that ultimately produce man's most valued metal. Interior and underground scenes are competently handled and surmount what must have been difficult lighting problems. The production of King of Metals is aptly in scale with the extent of its subject matter." Movie Makers, Dec. 1950, 468.

“Accompanied by Ruhi Su and Rahmi Saltuk’s folk songs, the film tells the story of poverty, struggle, and resistance in a different way, with an interesting montage.
