Midnight Sailing of the S.S. Manhattan

Date produced: 1933

Filmmaker(s):

Duncan MacD. Little

Description:

"A ship film of an entirely different character was the stunning record of a midnight sailing by the S.S. Manhattan. Produced by Duncan Little, ACL, and presented on the program of his fourth annual movie party, this picture was caught entirely through the strength of Army airplane detecting searchlights which illuminated the sailing. Mr. Little took full advantage of his exciting setup, presenting numerous reaction shots of the great lamps and their pigmy operators silhouetted against the diffused light in the atmosphere, as well as of the beautiful new vessel picked out of the darkness by the stabbing beams." Movie Makers, June, 1933, 226.

Mining Chrome Ore in New Caledonia

Date produced: 1933

Filmmaker(s):

Enoch Perkins

Description:

"An outstanding example of industrial record filming is Mining Chrome Ore in New Caledonia, by Enoch Perkins, ACL. Probably no amateur film ever was made under more unfavorable conditions and with as little opportunity to secure special equipment to meet them. Yet the photographic quality of this film is very high and it stands as a tribute to Mr. Perkins's ability to overcome obstacles. A large part of the picture was made in a mine where the atmosphere was so charged with moisture that it was necessary to stop and wipe the lens dry every few minutes. Although lighting was a tremendous task and often cables over a thousand feet long were required, the mine scenes are accurately exposed and well photographed. The picture gives a complete record of mining ore from the solid wall of the tunnels to the loaded freighter. It was filmed from an engineer's point of view and for the specific purpose of record; however, smooth continuity and editing maintain audience interest." Movie Makers, Dec. 1933, 500, 522.

Minnesota State Fair

Date produced: 1948

Description:

"What would have been an excellent film under any circumstances becomes outstanding as a group production. Produced by the Minneapolis Cine Club, it was originally conceived by William S. Block, carried out under the supervision of G. L. Larson, with Earle E. Ibberson in charge of production, while club president Elmer W. Albinson did the final cutting and editing. All members contributed directly to the project, either in filming or by helping to complete the picture. In the film we accompany two teen-agers, a 4-H boy and girl, on a grand tour of the fair, visiting exhibits, marvelling at the livestock show,standing pop-eyed before the midway spectacles, puzzling over the complexities of modern art, gasping at the fireworks display against the night sky. A running gag furnishes comedy relief, while the wholesome charm of our young guides is revealed in a sympathetic and appealing fashion. The members' filming is consistently competent, and deft editing has made Minnesota State Fair a well integrated and thoroughly enjoyable entertainment." Movie Makers, Dec. 1948, 476, 491.

Modelli Volanti [Flying Models]

Date produced: 1939

Filmmaker(s):

Fernando de Francisco

Description:

"The film is a propaganda documentary and above all wants to be an invitation to model aircraft hobbyism. The model airplane is today designed on a scientific basis and built with technical criteria in perfect analogy with the modern aircraft. The film begins with a quick review of the most rudimentary aircraft coined by the child's imagination, from the paper plane to the kite, to the toy. Here begins the sequence of the model aircraft school and the complete construction of a reticular structure model with an elastic line motor. On the airfield, the model receives the baptism of the air with its first flight, while, in contrast to the furious evolutions of the motorized models, the sailplane models launched with cable fly light and safe. The highest constructive perfection and the greatest aerodynamic finesse make the large models of gliders, which are the subject of the third part of the film, suitable for launch from the slope. Spontaneous is the ideal and logical transition from glider models to soaring flight, a training ground for young people for the future feats of hunters and air bombers."—LITTORIALI DEL CINEMA ANNO XVIII program

"...che illustra il procedimento della costruzione in laboratorio dei modelli volanti, ponendo a raffronto il breve volo dei piccoli modelli con quello delle moderne pesanti macchine aeree"—I Littoriali del cinema: Un’altra interessante serie di documentari, La Stampa, September 3, 1939

"...which illustrates the process of laboratory construction of flying models, comparing the short flight of small models with that of modern heavy aerial machines."
